A lot of people ask me if I do portraits. Back in the day I used to do them for free. After awhile, I got sick of that and just let them pile up in my gmail box. I still accept submissions for free portraits but it's very rare that I do them. Basically the picture you send in has to be better than anything else I can come up with. But I am more than willing to do a piece like the one above for the low low price of $10. Just drop a ten-spot in the Paypal tip jar link over there on the left and send in your jpeg (the higher resolution, the better) and I'll whip it out with in a week. I'll email you the hi-res image and you can do whatever you like with it. So that's my new deal.

The Magnetic Pen Theory

Not hard to do. Use a very small tipped magnet and you can draw on it like it was an artists PC Drawing Tablet. Now if it was actually honest to Doug drawn using the actual vertical and horizontal knobs then that would be butt impressive. Perhaps a video of the act (sped up of course) would make this amazing. But its a pic so conversely...BURIED!

The Higher Than Normal Quality Etch-a-Sketch Theory

Last time I tried an etchasketch, you couldn't do angles on it without it looking like stairs. Either this 'travel etchasketch' is of much, much higher quality (doubtful), or this is faked.

The Silver Paper Theory

I call fake, how easy would it be to open this up and slip a silver sheet of paper in place of the screen and drawing in pencil which is essentially what the lines on etch a sketch look like.

Of course, they can't all be right. Either it was a magnetic pen, a super-special high quality Etch-a-Sketch, or it was the silver paper slipped under the glass. Which theory is correct? I'll let them fight it out amongst themselves. But when you guys do figure it out, please let me know. I'm dying to find out how I do these things!

Google-y Eyes Goes Down

So I've been rocking this stickered-up Etch for a while now. It burst on to the scene in October and instantly kicked my game up a notch with "Don't Tase Me Bro":

While it may seem like those are just random stickers that someone gave me, they're actually extremely symbollical. Being the mysterious artist type that I am, I've never revealed their hidden meaning until now. For the record: the zebra is on the left-right knob and it represents the flat, endless plains of Africa upon which civilization and human culture was born. The cat-piloted lightning bolt rocket ship on the up-down knob represents civilization's future and highest aspirations, the ultimate promise of technology and science; i.e. sending kittens into space.

Some time around the Super Bowl I added the all-seeing Google-y Eyes in honor of Google Image search, which is sort of my neo-Platonic paradise of visual reference material. The smiley mouth represents "get it? get it? It's a joke, see what I did there?"

The Google-y Eyed Etch-A-Sketch has served me well these past months. It has reliably produced some of my favorite pieces.

Sadly, however, it has recently started to leak:

The grey dust around the knobs is the first sign that this art-toy's days are numbered. Soon that dust will start getting on my fingers and then it'll spread to everything I touch. After that, it will start to slowly eat my brain. The aluminum powder in an Etch-a-Sketch is the same kind of dust that almost killed Buddy Epson when he tried to play the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz.

And so I must sadly announce that Google-y Eyes is being retired. Rather than just throw it in the trash, I thought a better way to honor Goog's contribution to the History of Etch-a-Sketch Art would be to sell it for far much more money than it's worth and donate all the proceeds to myself. If you've got $200 + shipping and handling, and an awesome picture you'd like me to sketch, hit me up at etchasketchist(at)gmail(dot)com and you could be the proud owner of this one-of-a-kind piece. I will draw your image with love and painstaking care. And when I'm done I will ritualistically stab the Etch-a-Sketch in the back and pour its guts out to preserve your picture for eternity. Then I will ship it off to you so you can do whatever you like with it. Hang it on a wall and look at it a lot or just leave it strewn casually on a coffee table and pretend you drew it when people ask about it. Really, I don't mind.

Lil' Sis vs. The Etchasketchist

Who wants to battle?

Went home and battled Lil' Sis to see who's the dopest knob rocker in the family. Ten minute time limit, straight off the dome, no references. The theme was PIRATES!

Lil' Sis was thinking about going to Berkeley at the time, but we all decided that having more than one of us going to a dirtbag hippy communist school would be just too embarrassing so I had to edit the photo a little bit. All the other pics are raw and untouched up straight from The Moms' camera.

Lil' Sis brought the skillz and looked to establish her Etch-a-Sketch bona fides. Underestimate her at your peril.

Her pirate has a good full beard, an eye patch, a bandana and a sword. The shirt is a little tight fitting, but he's got the physique to make it work. The belt and buckle is a classy touch. Stylish, but not ostentatious. The pose is bit ambiguous. Is he saying, "Stand back, ye scurvy dogs, or I'll run this wench through with me blade" or merely, "Hey, did anybody drop this cutlass? I'm going to go put it in lost and found if nobody's going to claim it, m'kay!"

Here's my guy. I maybe overdid it with the details and the background action. He's got the Jolly Roger, the ship out at sea, a treasure chest, sword, beard, eye patch, boots, vest, even a friggin' parrot. Makes you a little suspicious. Like he's trying a little too hard. Is this guy really a pirate or just a host at Long John Silver's? And the stance is all wrong. Pirate's don't claim islands in the name of Piratevania. He's got his back turned on his booty which is just askin' for it. See, even the parrot's thinking about flying off with a few doubloons.

Side by side it's hard to tell. As much as I'd love to just declare myself the winner, I suppose that would be slightly unfair seeing as how I'm technically in the competition. So what do you think? Who's the best knob rocker in my family*?

*please pick me. she's going to Stanford in the fall. This etchasketching crap is all I got!

Normally it takes me anywhere from 6 months to Never to get a free portait done. But these cute girls keep sending me pictures and there's not a lot of awesome things in the news to draw. Aimee sent in this challenging shot. The portait aspect ratio is always a toughy. Add a wacky a fur hat and a tweed jacket and you've got a whole textural smörgåsbord going on.
